Voidwings

Lore

Several thousands of years ago a celestial dragon called Vistol flew amongst the stars. The inky blackness of space held twinkling stars that made his scales shimmer as he traveled. The beauty of the universe enthralled him and he feasted upon the planets held within. Fueled by the burning or frozen cores in the planets he swallowed he was filled with large quantities and purpose. A drive to bring order to the things around him led him to consume more volatile planets that threatened their systems and the power from within these planets began to drive him mad.

The comfort he once took in the dark solitude of space began to feel like a prison and he lashed out at the system around him in frustration. His rampage continued for several thousand years and he became known as a 'world eater' to smaller species that traveled to different planets.

As he paced through the cosmos in his rage he caught sight of a beautiful trail of stars and swirling nebulas. Such colors and light lit the fires of jealousy in his heart. If only he could create such beautiful colors, such wonderful stars….then perhaps he could create the order in the universe he longed for. He followed the trail until he found a great white beast with many colorful feathers, another celestial being like himself. He came to know her as Jalis, and in his madness believed that if he consumed her that he would gain her power.

Vistol attacked Jalis and their battle shook the planets around them, leaving dark swirling nebulas in their wake. When their battle finally ended Jalis limped away and took refuge in a small star system. The battle left Vistol wounded as well but during their fight he was able to expel the excess energy from his body that had come from consuming the volatile planets. His sanity had finally returned and he became aware of what he had done. He followed Jalis to the star system where she took refuge and found her weeping, and from her tears and blood he watched her create a world that would be later known as Armondis. Vistol felt guilt for his actions, such a warm and kind celestial being was now forced hide and heal rather than dancing amongst the stars as she once did.

Vistol summoned much of the ore and minerals in his body and made a planet of his own in the same system. This planet would be known as Karoxza and he decided that he would use this world to satisfy his need to create order in the space around him. While Vistol still deeply admires Jalis's skills, abilities, and beauty, he is not able to see much of the world she created. Any time he tries to see it she spreads her broken wings and hides it with a glamor to keep its secrets hidden from him. Vistol was once again jealous and it is said the large spires sticking out of Karoxza are the result of his jealously manifesting in his creation.

Vistol wanted to create his world with pieces of himself in it and eventually came to create the 'Voidwings'.

He first created the Tragon voidwings, and gave them a piece of the horn upon his head. This horn was comprised of all the minerals he had consumed and each Tragon would have a piece of this 'core' show on their chest in various sizes, shapes, and patterns. As his first creation he gave them special favor and their magic and blood is closest to his own. Their strong sense of justice, natural leadership skills, and desire for order would lead their people to long and powerful empire.

Next he created the Krake Voidwings, to them he gave a piece of his underbelly scales. Its tough and durable material became the core of the Krakes and can be lies deep within their tummies. Krakes are naturally strong willed and hard workers, they were not given wings and as a result are more in tune with the planet. They can dig deep tunnels with relative ease and bring up valuable ore. Their dedication and durability makes them great warriors and the backbone of the Voidwing's industrial success.

Finally he created the Nyvern's and to them he gave a piece of his wings. This flexible yet strong material became the core for the Nyverns and lies within their wings. Nyverns are the most plentiful type of Voidwing on the planet but their value should not be underestimated. Their ability to adapt and problem solve is a great boon for the Voidwing species. Their ability to communicate and find the middle ground in most situations has led them to be leaders in the interspecies communications department.

It is through each of these 'cores' that the Voidwings are able to access their voids. They see this as a physical testament to their direct connection with their deity.

While it is said that Vistol has become somewhat dormant for the past several hundred years the Voidwings still have close ties to him via the cores they have within them. These cores are seen in the form of strong mineral and or deposits in the area related to the species subtype.

Voidwings were also blessed by the deep cold of the void and as a result each Voidwing has a frost breath ability. This ability does not give control of ice magic.

Frost Breath

Every Voidwing has frost breath. This is not the same as ice magic and does not allow any control of ice outside of being able to breathe it out.

Void State

Every Voidwing has the ability to open a void on their body in a specific place. For Nyvern and Tragon subtypes this area is their wings, while for the Krake subtype the scaled hood on their neck give them access to their void. This ability actually earned them their nickname 'Voidwings' across the galaxy.

This ability is sacred to their people and is something they learn to access and use in early adult hood. Once the crystal core inside the Voidwing has reached a mature state of growth they can begin to practice accessing their void. Each void is unique and individual to the Voidwing that can access it. They believe that each void is linked to a scale on the body of their god Vistol where they can store their items and treasures.

To access their void a Voidwing must first enter their 'void state'. In this state they are slightly more vulnerable and as a result don't tend to stan in it for long periods of time. While in this state their eyes, insides, and wings or hood scales will reflect a portion of space. Usually it is a purple color with glimmers of stars but other colors and celestial phenomena have been observed in rarer cases.

Once in their void state the Voidwing can put an item through the void and into their own personal pocket dimension to store it for later. Once in the void matter and atoms rearrange themselves into a specific geometric shape regardless of the objects original orientation. In most cases once in the void an object will take on the shape of a square or rectangle. In rare cases a Voidwing's possessions will turn into other shapes such as cones, spheres, pyramids, ect. A Voidwing's possessions will only ever be one shape once in its void. For some this is a blessing and for others it feels like a curse as it can make organizing these possessions much simpler or much harder.

Once an object is pulled out of the void it will return to its original shape and size instantly. A void wing can only ever fit themselves into their voids up to about their arms and are unable to fit their whole bodies inside.

Over time they have learned that while it is fine to keep food items, inanimate objects, treasures, ect. in their voids, keeping a living creatures in there is ill advised. It has proven to be fatal in most cases as the matter of a living creature can only be altered so much before it makes normal life functions hard. In rare cases it is ok to do this but it usually only works if the creature is very small and already somewhat shaped similarly to the shape that it will form to once put into the void.

Voids have an interesting ability to preserve things for longer than normal, somewhat like how a refrigerator would but without the need to be cold. While food items and other organic matter lasts longer there it can still spoil or wither, it just takes a while for this to happen.

Most Voidwings use their void to store precious items they want to keep with them at all times, treasures, or practical items like adventuring gear. While the void may seem endless it does have limitations. Vast quantities of items being present in their void can result in the Voidwing feeling sluggish or tired. Eventually if too many items are added their void will no longer accept new items and the Voidwing will struggle to move and stay awake.

Variants

Voidwings come in varying shapes and sizes with some features that stand out on each subtype. These subtypes are specialized for certain areas on their home planet. Something shared by each varient is the relative ear shape and the eyes. Each Voidwing's eyes naturally have a dark sclera and a white pupil.

Nyvern Variant

“N-eye-vern”

Natural Traits:Wings, Alt Eyes.

Void Region: Wings.

—-

The most common type of Voidwing is the Nyvern Subtype. The core for this subtype is found in the bones of their wings and is usually a deposit of lighter materials/minerals. Their wings are very flexible and the wing 'fingers' are fully dexterous and can be used like a large set of hands if desired. They possess clawed hands, pawed back feet with retractable claws, and long flexible tails. In their grand form they possess tiny front arms that they really don't use, instead using their wings for anything that requires dexterity. They also have long thin necks that they can twist and contort with ease. Nyverns make up a large portion of the population found in the forested regions of Karoxza and are rather common in large cities and capitols as well. They also do well in spaces near water and enjoy swimming. Their wings work great under water. When that is not an option or space is limited they have a more standard/condensed form they will take where their arms and hands are more proportional to their body.

When in their condensed form and not using their wings, they will drape their wings over their shoulders like a cape. This can help provide warmth, keep them dry, protect from wing, and in general looks rather fashionable. By nature they are usually great problem solvers and tend to be good at finding a middle ground amongst conflicting parties.

Krake Variant

“k-ray-k”

Natural Traits: Scales, Spikes, Reptile hood, Alt Eyes.

Void Region: Hood scales.

—-

Krake Voidwings are very sturdy and naturally come with tough belly scales, thick tails, and a 'hood' made of large flexible scale plates. Their chins are pointed and they usually sport a pair of horns on their head. Their hands and feet are equipped with durable pointed 'claw like' digits that still allow for great dexterity. They do not naturally have have wings and as a result they access their voids through their scaled hoods. Their core is located deep with in their abdominal cavity and they get a lot of 'feelings' from it that help guide their decisions. It also leads them to usually crave certain ores and minerals under the planets terrestrial surface. They don't usually eat the ores, but chewing on them seem to satisfy these cravings.

Krakes thrive in deserts, mountainous regions, and harsher climates such as being near volcanos or in arctic tundra zones. Their ability to dig deep tunnels quickly means they are able to build their homes and cities underground and out of the direct weather conditions. While they are not bad swimmers most do not prefer to be in the water and rather prefer the feeling of the earth under and around them. They tend to have a lot of energy that they put to good use by working hard to harvest minerals and ores to sell or craft with. And due to their resilient nature a large portion of the Voidwing's military force is comprised of Krakes.

Tragon Variant

“T-rag-on”

Natural Traits: Wings, Fins, Mineral growth, Alt Eyes.

Void Region: Wings.

—-

The rarest of the Voidwings, Tragons are the 'blue bloods' of Voidwing society. Finding a Tragon with out some sort of royal family name or high status is almost unheard of. They usually have one horn on their head that is often made of some form of crystal, mineral, or ore, along with a matching mineral or gem on their chest. This is their core, and Tragon's are the only species that are known to have their core be visible. Their grand form is quadrupedal and sports the same dexterous wings found on Nyverns as well as pawed back feet with retractable claws and clawed front hands. Their tails are long and usually have two small fins near the tip that act as rudders when flying. The 'wing fingers' end in claws and on the dorsal part of the wing there is a strip of flexible cartilage. This makes their wings very durable and the wing 'fingers' more damage resistant. Many Tragons will have a small shape cut into the lower part of their wing to mimic the natural shape found on the current acting king or queen. It is also normal to see them have the wing shape cut to mimic a past rule that they may admire or have been inspired by.

Tragon's make up most the population in the inner cities and capitols. They also are the majority of Voidwings you will find in their parliament. Due to the wealth and status they constantly surrounded by they can tend to be on the snobby side and greed is very prevalent amongst them. Despite this they actually tend to be good leaders and can understand the value of putting their people above themselves in large scale circumstances.

Tragons tend to be more magically powerful than other Voidwings and also have more void space and carrying capacity than others.

Life Cycle

Tragon's come from a geode like structure that is imbued with both of their parent's core essence. This can take some time to do and these 'eggs' grow slowly. Eventually a gem or mineral forms on the outside of this egg and this will reflect the Voidwing's core material. Each baby Voidwing has a small modified tooth on the end of their nose that looks like a horn. They will use this tooth to break open the egg from the inside when they are ready to hatch.

They will eventually lose this tooth over time as they grow, though it tends to stay through the childhood years. As they grow they are in their 'grand form' at all times and will be able to use their 'standard/condensed' form once they become a teenager. Because of this Nyvern's will use their wings as their hands for quite a few years but still find ways to develop fine motor skills for the smaller arms on their chest.

Once they reach adulthood they will be able to freely shift between these forms as well as use their void ability. They will be able to travel, explore, and make their own way in the world.

Death is not something that they usually have to worry about. Death can occur if they take too much damage/their core is destroyed, if they have an illness the degrades their core or if they do not supply their core with enough nutrients/minerals. Though 'starving' a core can take 100+ years and is unlikely to happen. If a Voidwing keeps its core safe and makes sure to have good nutrition, they can continue to exist as long as they like. If a Voidwing has accomplished all it has set out to do and wishes to rest peacefully they can enter a coma like slumber and will eventually pass away, though this process may take days, weeks, months, or even years, the Voidwing is unaware of the passing of time.

If/when they do die, their body mineralizes over a period of time and will eventually become a statue of sorts, usually with veins of their core material running through this 'statue'. In rare cases the entire 'statue' may be made of the core material.
