degil

This is an old revision of the document!

Degil

Degils are a deer/bird hybrid that are very in tune with nature. Their horns are made completely out of crystal and they have special sacs on their flanks that hold their magic. A Degil's magic naturally makes the plants around them grow better and more resistant to blights. Degils are fiercely protective of natural sites which they deem sacred.

Degils are often seen as very compassionate creatures that have been known to protect others that can’t protect themselves. Degils magic has a big influence on plants and it can help protect them in the long run. Their homes often have large thorny bushes around them as a result of this influence on nature. In a life or death situation, a Degil can draw the life from plants and nature around them to give themselves more magic in an attempt to overcome or escape from a current threat. This is not something they can do easily and is very taxing on them once the extra magic has worn off. They must often rest for days at a time after one of these spells.

Variants

Across all Degil Variants there are several consistent factors in their looks: horns, thick neck fur, bird-like back feet, and hooved (though sometimes paws) front feet. Their neck furs can form a fur hood that can cover their ears and horn when it is cold.

Though there are several variants of Degil, they all have a lot in common magically. All Degils have magical 'vents/pouches' on their sides. These vents glow faintly when not using magic, and brightly when they are. All variants of Degil can also shapeshift into several different forms. Every Degil has the ability to take on a Human form at will once magically strong enough. This can be an bipedalform, satyr form, fully Human, or centaur form. It is said they can do this because when Solaris was still whole they had strong visions of such creatures in their dreams and when they split into three separate beings this influence was still prevalent.

Common Degil

Common Variant Degil (Click for Larger Image). The Common Degil is the most familiar type of Degil found on Redoa and within the species. They have everything vital needed to a Degil, though without the fancy additions that some of the other Degil variants. They typically make their homes in forests and open plains.

Fairy Degil

Fairy Variant Degil (Click for Larger Image). Natural traits: Insect wing and Multiple Ears.

Fairy Degils often sport a pair of insect-like wings on their back. They are semi-transparent and despite their thin appearance they are also quite durable. When not in use, they can lay their wings flat against their back. They also often have two pairs of ears, though no one is sure why this trait is more prevalent with the Fairy Subtype.

A Fairy Degil's fur is soft and silky, and it is common that flowers and plants grow on them at times. They are able to learn nature magic easier than other Degil variants.

Manta Degil

Manta Variant Degil (Click for Larger Image). Manta Degil have large manta wings that let these Degil soar through the water instead of the air, gills on their neck, and fins on their back for steering in the water. Their neck fur is often shorter so as not to block the gills and prevent taking in breaths while under the water. They can sometimes have stingers/barbs on the end of their tail. Most are just a large spike, but occasionally they can have a stinging toxin in them.

A Manta Degil has less fur than other Degil variants, but the fur they do have is water proof and does not shed often. These variants can live in water or on land, as they can easily breathe on either. They are able to learn water magic easier than other Degil variants.

Dragon Degil

Dragon Variant Degil (Click for Larger Image). On a Dragon Degil, they always have wings that are bat/dragon like in nature. Though they can present in simpler fashions, they are almost always reflecting dragon wings unless other traits are used. Their tails also commonly end in a spade, but it is not a requirement.

Dragon Degils have a mix of scales and fur, with patches of scales growing all across the Degil's body and can be easily seen. They are naturally fire proof and are able to learn fire magic easier than other Degil variants. They also have an affinity for shiny things and treasure, guarding what they deem valuable with their lives.

Demi-God Degil

Demi-God Variant Degil (Click for Larger Image). Demi-God Degil are a special variant of Degil that is said to have the blood of the divine in their veins. They have a lot of mystery surrounding them, and are one of the rarest Degil variants in existence. It is only rumored that they can take a grand form in the form of a large stag, however, only other Demi-God Degil's know this to be true. When they are in their regular form, it is nearly impossible to tell that they are a Demi-God Degil.

These Degil tend to be elusive and are not keen to share what they are with others. They are a large source of magic that is desired by many for the opportunity they can provide as well as their sheer power. Staying hidden is the top priority for this variant of Degil. In their grand forms they are capable of amazing magical feats, but at the cost of burning through their magic reserves at an alarming pace. Due to this, these Degil only use their grand form when absolutely needed. They can sense shifts in magic to tell if good or bad luck is coming their way.

Life Cycle

A Degil’s life expectancy ranges from any age as their magic determines their life span. Unless gravely injured, very sick, or they have used all their magic without resting, they can essentially live forever. This is not to be confused with them being immortal, as they are not.

Degils can mate like other animals, or magically. When not mating magically females often have a 4-5 month gestation time. Same sex couples are required to mate magically for offspring. When they decide to mate magically, two Degils will come together in a special garden they have prepared and touch horns, allowing their magic to mix.

Their magic will call to the earth and the couple will be wrapped in flowering vines. The vines lightly prick a small amount of blood from each Degil and combines the DNA in a magic fusion. After about 10 minutes a pod will form from the vines once they fall away from the parents. The pod contains the Degil fawn and will need a lot of care over the next 4-5 months. It is normal for the parents to have already built a shelter around the pod so that is easily kept safe. Once the pod opens the fawn will have flowers that have bloomed all over its coat that must be removed. The parents will nuzzle the child, trying to remove the flowers from their baby, once this is done the fawn wakes up and begins to try to walk.

Lifestyles

Degils are able to learn other magics besides just nature magic. It can take some time and certain Degil variants are able to more easily learn certain magic types over others. Degils have towns, villages, and settlements all across Redoa, though some Degils prefer to live alone. They make great use of magitech.

Magic

All Degils have magic that they can channel with their crystal horns. On their flanks they have three clear patches of skin where you can see their magic reserves. The stronger a Degil's magic, the brighter they will glow and sparkle. A Degil's magic is their life's blood and if that runs out, they will die. Degil's charge their magic by sleeping. When asleep their minds are connected to the earth and they can ‘recharge’. This means a Degil can decide when they want to die simply by not sleeping. A Degil must stay awake for around 14 days for their magic to run dry.

Due to having a close connection with nature they have a strong ability to detect sickness in plants and animals. They can use this to help prune sickness from fields and help creatures that are ill. While they lack hands in their natural form they are capable of using their natural magic to levitate objects as well as complete complex tasks with it. Their horns act like a wand or catalyst of sorts to help them channel this magic.
